"ELLA"
I have said this before, summer can be hard for Ella. Unlike me who loves NOT having the constant schedule that the school year brings she thrives when there is a routine and a schedule. She also misses seeing people at school. If I’m not making constant plans for her, she’s pretty much left with hanging with me most of the time and like all teens, hanging out with your mom all the time isn’t the coolest.
This summer my friend Kristin Fox (who works as a job coach for Project Search through the Warren County Career Center) has started a hangout group for teens and young adults with disabilities to help them continue to work on independence, social skills and life skills.
Ella is loving this so far! She is loving this walking group that currently meets at the park twice a week. They set goals for fitness and also work on their conversation skills while they workout.
Kristin texts them photos after their meeting in a group chat so they can also work on appropriate text responses! All good life skills and it’s taking the responsibility off me to make sure she’s working on them.
If you’re a primary care giver, then I know you understand how exhausting it can be to always have in the back of your head that you should be doing more to help your child practice these skills! I think this kind of group is so needed in our community and I’m excited to see where it goes.
Summer should be about fun and socializing with friends when you are a teenager. Thankful when opportunities like these come along and trying harder to take advantage of them because it’s good for Ella and I.

"MARY"
As Mary entered middle school, many of her social opportunities disappeared.
She still wanted peer interaction, things to look forward to, and dreamt of a trusted friend group. She was so lonely and I felt powerless to help her. Any activity I arranged for her ended up involving me being there. That certainly isn't ideal for her! Then Covid hit and her world got even smaller.
The Hang Out group and the programming that Kristin offers has been a life-line getting Mary back into the world. The group works hard on those social and communication skills that will prove to be vital in her quest to be independent.
So many times, my teen doesn't want to hear suggestions from me. Kristin provides an atmosphere for growth that makes the learning part of the fun.
As primary caregivers, it can be exhausting always wondering if we are doing enough. The programming provided by You've Got This adds another layer to your team, making sure you are covering your bases and finding those blind spots.
The best part is the groups are having fun and developing meaningful friendships!
When I was a teen, summer was about hanging out with friends. I am so grateful that Mary has the opportunity to do just that.
We can't wait to see what Kristin comes up with next! I am so grateful that Mary has something to look forward to.

"Hallie"
As a Speech and Language Therapist, I first met Kristin Fox in 2010 when her four-year old son
was my client. Thirteen years later Kristin and her family are our close family friends too. I am
so excited that Kristin created The Hang Out Group. Our 13-year-old daughter has apraxia and
absolutely loves The Hangout Group. Kristin is thorough in her planning and creates events that
have helped Hallie become more social, more responsible and excited to wake up in the
morning. Kristin sends personal texts with checklists so that Hallie is prepared for her groups
and knows what her expectations are. Kristin is patient, kind and amazingly skilled at working
with children to build their self-esteem, life skills and social skills.
