Everyday as a parent we see our children struggle in areas that unfortunately can’t be addressed on an IEP or in a classroom. Issues that unknowingly have been created by those that love our kids the most “over helping/loving” ( I hate the word enabling...but I’m guilty).
In some cases issues that may stem from his or her disability that need situational role playing and structured practice to overcome. These struggles can also be lessened with tools to help successfully self manage when faced with a challenge.
Developing life skills such as good personal health and hygiene, appropriate behavior in a social setting and being independent in the community are so important for a person to obtain to help them navigate adulthood.
I recognize there is a HUGE need for young adults struggling with developing these skills to have the opportunity to participate in social outings and activities outside of the classroom where there is an adult or a skilled facilitator standing by to take the lead to course-correct and demonstrate the appropriate response if an issue arises.
My goal is to offer a variety of activities that will give these young adults enjoyable opportunities to socialize with age appropriate friends in fun, social, aerobic and everyday life settings. Different events will provide those scenarios to develop life skills, model appropriate social interactions, or just get out and have fun.
Check out our calendar of events to find opportunities for your child to get involved with The Hangout Group.

This Group focuses on developing social appropriateness and age level independence. We will work on growing friendship skills, safety and rules at home, personal independence. These groups will be interactive and hands on activities.
This Group focuses on developing age appropriate social and life skills to help these preteens get prepared for the physical and emotional changes they will soon be experiencing. Socialization and activities with peers begin to be more social events and less like playdates. The Hangout group will help to develop the skills needed for those transitions. Just as the older age group we have a lot of fun during these hangout nights. This group may join the older age group for the events in which the topics and skills being discussed will be appropriate. The focus will be on becoming more independent at home and work on creating confidence. As always these lessons are disguised as group activities to ensure a natural flow in the learning process.
